.puzzling world

I kind of shot myself in the foot last week.

I had "won" the weekly Sunday challenge at this flickr group (Strobist Sundays). The winner has the honor to choose a new winner the week after and a new assignment for the week thereafter. Since I am always having trouble with shining objects and most definitely with metal, I choose to challenge the other with just that: Shiny Metal.

Never thought about it that I to had to compete this challenge as well, until time was almost gone, and I had to find an object that suited my needs...

I contacted a friend, who had once offered to lend me this puzzle-globe in order to take a photograph of it  (possibly this triggered me to choose the assignment this week).
I think it was a Christmas gift from a client from work or something. The puzzle actually comes apart and is held together by a magnetic force, somewhere in the core of the little earth. Come to think of it; quite accurate...

Anyhow, I never would have thought this to be such a head breaker. I put up a light tent, took a shot and saw myself reflected. Obviously. So I took it from a different angle. Still me, hiding in one of the puzzle pieces.

Next, I decided to create a white sheet that covered the front, to eliminate reflection of little old me. Yeah, now where does one put the camera genius..?

Scissors, hole in the sheet, focus, guestimate the aperture needed with the lights set up, click. This is one of the pictures taken from that point in time. After this it got worse...

I decided I didn't like the large aperture (creating the shallow Depth of Field) and the white in the background was not white enough for my taste. Experimenting with smaller apertures, and more light, the lines that hold together the light tent became visible very strong. Also not really the way to go.

On black then? Sure. but have you ever tried to get light to go through black? Nimwit.

So, Black background with one side covered on the inside of the tent with black? Might give it a look of a rising sun from the east!? Sure. Right. In what Universe does the Sun reflect as a white rectangle in a metal sphere? Not any universe I know of, that's for sure.

Give me a sign when you have found a universe with lines and square sunrises. i have a picture that might fit is just fine...

(I might upload some photos of the missteps on a later point, for now I am just grumpy. These kind of setbacks can ruin your day apparently...)
